Relative to hiring movers to move you and your stuff, it seems to me that the consensus is to get REFERRALS from friends and family and anyone else that you trust. I have heard that most of the people dissatisfied with their movers found them online. Luckily, I know a number of people who have moved in the last couple of years and we are starting there. I recommend you do the same. Here's a good checklist from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
So what about preparing for when the movers come to pick up your stuff? Unless you're lucky enough to have the financial resources to have someone pack your entire house for you, there's quite a bit to do.
Of course Martha has a helpful timetable, a list of essential packing supplies and tips for successful packing. Also check out the long list of moving articles at Better Homes & Gardens.

You're absolutely right about getting referrals!! We moved three times within a years time and our last move was a disaster. We had received a postcard from the company (Parks Moving, headquartered in Pittsburgh) and they were supposed to be "professionally trained". The guys laughed when I asked them about that during our move. Well, after a deeply scratched wood floor, damaged couches (brand new), chipped bureaus and a couple broken dishes, we basically got nothing back from the extra insurance we bought after deductibles and their hired estimator. So it pays to check out your mover by people who actually used them. Another site I found helpful during one move was the "Fly Lady" website. Very good organizational tips for the regular type of person who tends to procrastinate (me)! Good luck!!!!

Bethany, thanks so much for all your house-selling and moving insight. So helpful. And great that you reminded me of flylady!
