Today in West Chester, PA it's been 60 degress, with torrential down pours, then sunny (with a rainbow), then we had some hail, snow flurries, 50 mph wind gusts and now it's heading down into the 20's tonight. Quite a full day. Where is spring? For some reason this year more than most I am waiting impatiently for those perfect spring days and for our last frost so that I can plant my caladium bulbs. Friday I called out sick from work (had a multi-day headache) and the only thing I accomplished all day besides getting some much needed rest was starting a garden journal for the new-to-us garden. There is only so much House of Babies, Bend it Like Beckham and MTV Cribs that one person can endure when not watching the inside of ones eyelids.
I had all this stuff in a binder (yea, I'm a binder freak like that) but it was too rigid. I think this is more free and condusive to creativity. I left some room around some of the clippings to make notes like where to plant some of the flowers. I got this idea from the current issue of Country Home and also thinking about Victoria's inspiration journals.
Are you guys excited about gardening this season? Planning on planting or growing anything new? I am actually planning on doing quite a bit of container gardening this year since I would like to see what comes up in the planting beds first before I start tearing stuff up. Container gardening is great if you have very little or no yard. I actually enjoy it more because it can feel more manageable.
Hope you are all having a great weekend. It's quiet here since the boy is in Utah on business. Yesterday was such a bust with my quasi-migraine but today was better. For breakfast I made scrambled eggs with cut up bits of tortilla that I sauteed in oil first. I added a little salsa to the eggs and some seasonings. I got the idea from Nigella Express but for the life of me I can't find the recipe. It was yum. I am going to try it out on the boy when he gets back.
I WISH I had a garden!! I don't even have a patio where I'm at right now :( I do have plants in my apartment though and these are some great ideas...I think I might add some more! Thanks!!

My big plans are to start a small raised vegetable garden, a compost pile, and some container plants. We have lots of landscaping to do because we moved in a year ago and only made a little progress on the grass areas of the yard. I was just reading a book I have on Prince Charles' garden at Highgrove... oooh so inspiring!!!

I am SO excited about gardening this year -- it seems I am reminded of it everywhere I go.
I have never had a problem with garlic sprouting, but some that I bought just last week produced little green sprouts after sitting on my windowsill. Must be a sign!

Winter in Missoula can be glooming and dark with a horrible inversion problem, but in the last week, we have had some glorious sunny days. All I want to do is uncover my garden. I keep watching the little early sprouts of tulips, iris and a few others I don't have names for. My garden makes me so happy, I am going to be sad (but a little excited) when we move and I have to start over again. I am going to dig up a few things to take with, like the bearded iris that came from the garden my mom had when I was a kid and my hens and chicks that I love so much. I love the idea of a journal. Maybe I will do a photo journal of our new garden. I love seeing what comes up when you move to a new spot.

Hmmm. At Home Depot, this afternoon, a river birch jumped in my cart. It was $19.99 and I couldn't pass that up. Now, I just have to find a good place for it where it can grow undisturbed by the dogs.....
By the way, I like the image of the gravel patio. Where is it from? Everytime I mention a simple gravel patio or stone dust patio, I get odd looks. But, the simplicity appeals very much.

Kathleen, I love river birchs. The image of the gravel patio is from Real Simple magazine.
Amy, I love your idea of a photo journal of your actual garden. A great way to keep track of what you have and where.
Bethany, if you like Price Charles' garden you might like Gardens Illustrated magazine produced by the BBC. http://www.gardensillustrated.com/ I have seen it at Barnes & Noble and Borders.

We are having the same winter-hanging-on predicament here in Montana. I am so ready for spring although I am thankful (sorta) for the snow as I hope we will have a mellow fire season this year.
